Music For Dykes Pt. 1

So, The Organ broke up and ceased to exist. Don’t worry, there are still lots of dyke & women featured bands out there (and at least Peaches can never break up with herself). Here’s a little guide to what’s new(-ish) AND female (*) on the music scene. Move over, Melissa!

1/ The Gossip
The only band in this list who’s been featured on The L Word and the only band with a (confirmed?) lesbo-singer. Their songs have been remixed by Soulwax, MSTRKRFT AND Le Tigre. They sound old and new at the same time and they don’t shave their armpits. (And what a voice!) It can’t go wrong for these girls…

2/ CSS
Already (indie-)famous, not in the least for great song titles like “Let’s Make Love & Listen To Death From Above”, “Music Is My Hot Hot Sex” & “Meeting Paris Hilton”. I saw them live a few weeks back and I can assure you that the stage was not a dyke-free zone (nor was the audience) (I was there). Electropunk for young AND retired hipsters (like ourselves).

3/ Lily Allen
Lily Allen was last summer’s MySpace hype in Europe and is now well on her way to talking the USA by storm. She’s equally famous for making melodic grime-meets-pop music as for badmouthing fellow musicians. Lily Allen on the Pussycat Dolls: “They’re too skinny, take all their clothes off, don’t say anything, promote womanizing and look like lapdancers as far as I’m concerned. It’s a really bad message to be sending young women. And not just for young women – but for young men. For them to believe that that’s what women are like in real life in such a hideous concept to sell to people. It’s just terrible.” A dyke icon to be, or what?

4/ Amy Winehouse
I first saw Amy Winehouse on Never Mind The Buzzcocks. She was drunk as hell, looked like a crack whore and made me laugh very very hard. Little did I know then that she was about to become The Next Big Thing in music. Amy Winehouse is everywhere right now with her Nowadays Blues. Thank God she didn’t go into rehab.

5/ New Young Pony Club
NYPC is not an all-female band but they are signed on the extremely hip Modular label & they use the über-trendy word ”pony” in their band name, so that kind of equals things out. Thanks to the internet indie-kids all around the globe have danced to their first single “Ice Cream” (have a taste and get the Bang Gang remix here) and I don’t think it will stop there. Indie-electro for dykes and friends.

(*) Some bands have men in them; but we’re tolerant enough to accept that, I guess?

Comments

beth ditto is definitely confirmed.

great list… i am not ok with the organ breaking up.

Wow, I thought BP and I were the only people on earth who loved The Organ. When we went to their show we were like 2 of 10 people there to see them. Htey were fantastic live. It totally sucks that they broke up. I also really love Mr Airplaneman, but they split up too.
