Dyke Music Pt. 2

6/ The Pipettes
I admit, The Pipettes are actually more a band for fags than for dykes. (I saw them perform last summer and standing right in front of me was a teenager with pink ribbons tied in his hair, a pink t-shirt & pink nail varnish. Just to give you an idea of the kind of audience they attract.) But we’re all queer, they’re all female and one of the Pipettes is so damn cute that I couldn’t resist listing them here. They’re also not very new but their retro polka-dot sunshine pop is bound to make you smile, so… do listen to Pull Shapes (7th song in the list) (and clap your hands if you want some more).

7/ M.I.A.
M.I.A.’s second album is due some time soon. Two singles have been dropped already to make us want it more when it’s finally released; XR2 was the excellent first one (some people think we’re stupid but we’re not) and it sounds even newer than the refreshing New her debut album sounded like, and that already sounded pretty damn new. Melodic power grime pop for dykes who are sick of hearing the same old boring Pink songs. And make no mistake: M.I.A. = the new girlpowerpower. (But she does have one of the most annoying websites ever.)

8/ El Perro Del Mar
The name sounds pretty tropical, but this one-woman-band is actually Swedish. And if you’re the kind of dyke who goes for soft dreamy female vocals with a (tiny) bit of an edge in pop tunes, then you’re going to love this. MySpacing is believing (listen to ‘Party’).

9/ Regina Spektor
Now that Joanna Newsom has gone from making weird-folk pop songs to composing weird-folk pop operas, Regina Spektor is well on her way to becoming the new queen of the weird-folksters. Her icy but haunting voice with that tiny tiny Russian accent is so sexy and folk music never sounded so exciting before (to me anyway). Folk as radio-ready pop, isn’t that any dyke’s dream?

10/ The Sounds
The only reason why The Sounds are in this list is because of this smashing Rex The Dog remix of their song ‘Tony The Beat’. It’s so unbelievably catchy and the melody will stay with you for at least three days (beware). They play it smart by putting two girls on their album cover, while the band actually consists of 4 guys and 1 girl (I know, what a fraud). But the girl sounds good enough to make us forget about the guys. Don’t forget to dance.

So, which stunning female in music did I miss?

Tara Jane O’Neil! The album “In Circles” was one of the most beautiful of the year. Subtle & haunting, very evocative of the pacific nw, where she writes and records.

Other things to peruse:

-Neko Case (but of course) Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
-Kaki King
-Electrelane (always a winner, and they have a new album coming out soon).

I used to DJ a show on a college radio station called “Odd Man Out”….old habits die hard, I suppose. Sleater-Kinney will forever reign at the top of the list for me, though.

Regina is so captivating live, I’d recommend her to anyone - plus her new album is proving even more appealing than the last, with “Fidelity” becoming incredibly pop-commercial.

I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

M.I.A. is fantastic too. I look forward to hearing her new songs, to see how she’s progressing from that very urban ‘world’ sound. If you haven’t already heard it, I recommend “Topknot” with the band Cornershop; download it!
