Dyke Anthems
In my never-ending quest to find the ultimate dyke anthem, I’m torn between two The L Word-related classics: (Flashdance) What A Feeling by Irene Cara and The Weakness In Me by Joan Armatrading. The first song is, admittedly, a bit of a born-again dyke anthem because of the whole Jennifer Beals/Bette Porter/The L Word-link. But hey, isn’t that also the reason why we still enjoy watching Flashdance (the movie) so much after all these years? (Well, I do anyway.) The Weakness In Me has a much stronger dyke connection because it was featured on the first The L Word soundtrack and it always brings the TiBette Drama to mind. But I can’t really decide between the two.
And there are of course also the covers of songs that were initially performed by male singers but are given a whole new dimension when sung by female singers. Recently Kylie covered Roxy Music’s ‘Love Is The Drug’, making it a 4-minutes-long hot dyke audio fest; even though she only says the word ’she’ just once in it. It’s the thought that counts.
And what to think of Cat Power and Karen Elson’s infinitely hot (and moany) rendition of Serge Gainsbourg’s Je t’Aime (Moi Non Plus)? Or the very lesbian interpretation (by Flat Pack with vocals by a certain Katty Heath) of Guns n’ Roses’ Sweet Child of Mine? (Listen to the Mylo Club Mix here >>)
At this point I haven’t even mentioned Melissa Etheridge, Skunk Anansie or Indigo Girls yet. There appears to be plenty of choice. Submit your all time favourite dyke anthem in the comments, maybe we can turn them into The Definitive Dyke Anthems List one day.

Joan Jett’s cover of Crimson and Clover, since we’re allowed to include covers. =) It ties into the L Word to as the song was used in the “Listen Up” episode.
Oh yeah!
If I remember correctly that version was also on the soundtrack of Monster. So that definitely makes it a dyke anthem.
Two tenuous suggestions …
‘Whispering Her Name’ - Alison Moyet
‘Nobody’s Wife’ - Anouk
